Ovulation: Hormonal regulation, follicular development, and ovum release
Ovulation is a vital process in human reproduction, governed by hormonal interactions and follicular changes. It involves the release of a mature ovum from the ovary, influenced by LH surge and estrogen levels.

Ovulation: Hormonal Regulation, Follicular Development, and Ovum Release
Ovulation is a crucial process in the female reproductive system, regulated by hormonal fluctuations and follicular changes in the ovaries. Understanding the physiology of ovulation is essential for reproductive health, fertility treatments, and contraceptive management.
Hormonal Regulation of Ovulation
The menstrual cycle is governed by a complex interplay of hormones, primarily involving the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. The key hormones responsible for ovulation include:
- Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Stimulates follicular growth in the ovary.
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Triggers ovulation through a surge in its levels.
- Estrogen: Promotes endometrial proliferation and influences LH surge.
- Progesterone: Prepares the uterus for potential implantation.
Follicular Development
Follicular development occurs in distinct stages:
- Follicular Phase: FSH stimulates multiple follicles; one dominant follicle is selected.
- Ovulatory Phase: The LH surge leads to the rupture of the dominant follicle, releasing the ovum.
- Luteal Phase: The ruptured follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, secreting progesterone.
Ovum Release and Post-Ovulation Changes
The mature ovum is expelled from the ovarian follicle and enters the fallopian tube. Fertilization may occur if sperm is present; otherwise, the corpus luteum regresses, leading to menstruation.
Clinical Significance
Understanding ovulation helps in diagnosing and managing conditions such as anovulation, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and infertility. Hormonal therapies and assisted reproductive technologies are often used to regulate ovulation.
