Inspection and Preliminary Assessment

Thyroid examination is a critical component of endocrine assessment. Proper palpation techniques allow physicians to detect abnormalities such as goiter, nodules, or tenderness associated with thyroid pathology.

Steps of Palpation

• Positioning: The patient is seated with the neck slightly extended.
• Visual Inspection: Observe the neck for asymmetry, swelling, or masses.
• Anterior Approach: Place fingers on the thyroid cartilage and gently move inferiorly.
• Posterior Approach: Standing behind the patient, place thumbs on the posterior aspect while fingers rest on the anterior.
• Swallow Test: Ask the patient to swallow to assess mobility of the thyroid gland.
